Dear Friends,
As Shabbat closes in we recognize that this is a poignant moment—a time when some of our congregants are still recovering from the storms of recent weeks; a time when our nation faces serious economic challenges; and, of course, a time when the world recalls the catastrophic events of September 11th ten years ago.
As a community of faith we remember the victims of 9/11 and we remain steadfast in our desire to let their memory be a blessing for all time. We will continue our efforts to bring acts of loving-kindness, tolerance, and understanding into this world as a testimony to the lives and values of the victims, the survivors, the loved ones and the first-responders.
This is the period of Elul, a time of reflection and hope. It seems fitting on this 10th anniversary of 9/11 to recite Psalm 27, the traditional text that we read in preparation for the Days of Awe. It has particular resonance on this weekend of remembrance.
from Psalm 27
The Eternal is my light and my deliverance;
Whom shall I fear?
The Eternal is the stronghold of my life,
Whom shall I dread?
When evil-doers assail me to devour me
Even my adversaries and my foes stumble and fall.
Should an army besiege me,
My heart would not fear;
Should war beset me,
Even then would I be confident.
Only one thing I ask of the Eternal
Only this do I seek:
To live in the house of the Eternal
All the days of my life to behold the graciousness of the Eternal
For God shelters me in the day of evil;
Hides me in the cover of God’s tent,
Raises me high upon a rock
And now my head shall be lifted up
above my enemies all around me
I will pray in God’s tabernacle with shouts of joy
Singing and chanting praises to the Eternal.
As a community, we will remember the victims of 9/11 this evening at Shabbat services, and we will celebrate the ways in which we work to make the world a safer place on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. during Mishpacha Minyan.
Wishing you and your loved ones a good and sweet year, and may the world know peace from this Shabbat to the next.
L’shalom,
Ruth
